A shocking revelation has emerged from the sudden collapse of a luxury caravan manufacturer, Zone RV, leaving a trail of financial woes and uncertainty in its wake. The company's $40 million debt to creditors has sent shockwaves through the industry, with a devastating impact on staff, customers, and suppliers alike.
The Fall of a Luxury Caravan Empire
Zone Manufacturing Pty Ltd, based on the Sunshine Coast, specialized in crafting premium caravans under the Zone RV brand. However, its sudden administration last week has left approximately 240 employees jobless and 180 customers in a state of limbo. The company's financial troubles were hidden until the bitter end, as it continued accepting customers' money right up until its closure.
At the first creditors' meeting, administrators Cor Cordis unveiled the staggering extent of Zone RV's financial distress. Customers are collectively owed around $18 million, suppliers are facing losses of up to $20 million, employee entitlements amount to $4 million, and taxpayers are on the hook for $1.4 million in unpaid taxes.
A Bleak Outlook for Creditors
Cor Cordis partner Rahul Goyal addressed the 250 individual creditors who joined the meeting, expressing his ongoing investigation into how Zone RV reached this dire situation. He emphasized the unusual nature of a business of this size owing such a substantial amount of money.
For the majority of unsecured creditors, including suppliers and customers, the outlook is grim. Goyal painted a bleak picture, stating that if the company were to be liquidated, the chances of recovering any funds are remote.
The Fate of Remaining Assets
There are a dozen or so caravans parked in the yard of Zone RV's Coolum factory, many bearing a "complete" sign. While most of the 280 employees have been let go, there are still 30-40 workers employed, some of whom are working on the remaining vans.
Cor Cordis has bolstered security around the premises, installing a large CCTV camera at the gate to safeguard the remaining assets. Goyal offered a glimmer of hope to a small group of customers who paid their final installments, indicating that they are the most likely to receive their completed or nearly completed vans by the end of next week.
The future remains uncertain for the remaining customers. Those who have made first and second payments are unlikely to have their caravans in any production line, while those who have made third payments may or may not have their vans in production.
There are approximately 180 customers owed varying amounts, ranging from $15,000 deposits to debts of $270,000.
Financial Stress Unveiled
An annual report obtained by the ABC reveals that Zone RV was under significant financial strain as early as 18 months ago. The audited report shows a $4.75 million loss in the 2023-24 financial year, with net liabilities of $10.8 million. The auditors expressed concern about the company's future, highlighting the dependence on current cash funding and the ability to raise additional capital or secure financing.
In June 2023, Zone RV's revenue stood at $77 million, with a wage bill of $4.6 million and $2.4 million in cash holdings. The company owed employees approximately $400,000 in leave and superannuation entitlements and still had outstanding payments of $765,900 to ex-founder Matt Johns.
Zone RV was holding $16.3 million in customer deposits and progress payments, but paid no dividends to shareholders, including sole director David Biggar, in the 2023-24 financial year. Biggar, who is also a director of at least 10 other companies, received $888,219 in director's fees during this period, according to the report.
The ABC attempted to contact Mr. Biggar at his registered address, but he was not available for comment.
