Thomas Hearns on the Four Kings' Chins: Marvin Hagler's Unbreakable Jaw (2026)

Thomas Hearns, a name synonymous with knockout power, has spoken! He's weighed in on who possessed the most formidable chin among the legendary 'Four Kings' of boxing. And his answer might surprise you, or maybe it won't.

Before his first world title challenge, Hearns, a Detroit native, had already established himself as a force of nature. Only three men had managed to survive a fight against him, a testament to his devastating power. This translated to an astonishing 96% knockout ratio! He further solidified this reputation by demolishing Pipino Cuevas in just two rounds to claim the WBA welterweight title in August 1980.

Hearns' illustrious career spanned an incredible 29 years, culminating in his final fight in 2006. During this time, he participated in 67 fights, including 19 world title bouts, and remarkably, won championships across five different weight divisions. He is, of course, best remembered for his epic battles with his fellow 'Four Kings': Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Marvin Hagler.

When asked by The Ring magazine to name the toughest chin he ever faced, Hearns didn't hesitate.

“Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Hands down. He took a lot of shots and kept coming.”

But here's where it gets controversial... Hearns' brutal power met Hagler's relentless pressure in April 1985 in Las Vegas, a fight for the undisputed middleweight title. Hearns had tasted defeat against Leonard but had previously triumphed over Duran. Hagler, in turn, had barely scraped past Duran, who later fell to Hearns in a swift two-round defeat.

From the opening bell, the fight was a relentless exchange of blows, with both fighters seemingly daring the other to bring their best. The crowd of 15,128 at Caesars Palace witnessed a brutal, uncompromising contest that lasted a mere eight minutes and one second.

Hagler, bloodied but unbowed, relentlessly pursued Hearns, weathering the storm of punches before his relentless pressure ultimately prevailed. Hearns was stopped in the third round. What was anticipated as a 12-round war became a three-round sprint, and in the fiery crucible of one of boxing's greatest fights, Hagler proved to be the superior finisher.
