Cannabis Seizure in Port Hope: A Multi-Million Dollar Operation Uncovered
In a significant operation, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have seized a substantial quantity of illicit cannabis, along with making multiple arrests, after executing a search warrant in Port Hope. The discovery came to light through an unexpected source: local firefighters.
In December, Port Hope firefighters responded to a structure fire at a property on 5th Line. During their response, they noticed something unusual - cannabis plants being grown on the premises. This led them to notify the police, setting in motion a series of events that would result in a major cannabis seizure.
On Thursday, OPP officers executed a search warrant at the property, uncovering a vast operation. They seized over 7,600 illicit cannabis plants and 100 lbs of dried illicit cannabis buds, valued at an estimated $3.8 million. This discovery highlights the extent of the illegal cannabis trade in the area.
As a result of the investigation, eight individuals were charged with serious offenses. Five individuals from North York, including Duc Le, Hoang Nga, Thu Nguyen, Thi Nguyen, and Ngyenthi Sang, faced charges related to the unlawful cultivation, propagation, and harvesting of cannabis plants, as well as possession with intent to distribute. The other three accused, Shua Tang-Zhong, Zhonghua Ye, and Yin Yang, were from Scarborough. They were also charged with the same offenses.
The accused were released from custody and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg. This case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat the illegal cannabis trade and the potential consequences for those involved. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and the role that local services, such as firefighters, can play in uncovering criminal activities.
