The NHL and the Florida Panthers have unveiled a synthetic ice rink as a legacy project of the 2026 Discover NHL Winter Classic, marking a significant milestone in the history of SLAM Miami school. This innovative rink, the first of its kind at the school, offers a unique opportunity for students to engage with hockey as a new athletic option. Founded by the renowned international superstar and entrepreneur Armando Christian Pérez, known as Pitbull, SLAM Miami focuses on sports-related education and post-secondary preparation for students in grades 6 through 12. The school's partnership with the NHL and the Panthers Foundation aims to provide students with hands-on access to hockey, fostering skills like sports leadership, teamwork, and perseverance.
The synthetic ice rink, a cost-effective and low-maintenance alternative to real ice, is a significant contribution to the school's athletic offerings. It was first introduced during the 2026 Discover NHL Winter Classic outdoor game and is now permanently installed on the school's outdoor rooftop terrace. The rink's installation was announced at a pep rally, where students were also surprised with tickets to the first-ever outdoor game in Florida, creating a memorable experience for the young athletes.
The NHL's commitment to community development is evident through the NHL Unites Legacy Projects, a long-term philanthropic initiative. Since 2003, the League and its Clubs have invested over $9.2 million in Legacy projects, aiming to build healthy and vibrant communities. The synthetic rink in Miami is a testament to this commitment, providing affordable access to ice and fostering the growth of youth hockey in the region. With participation in youth hockey increasing across various demographics, the NHL's efforts to make the sport accessible and engaging are making a tangible impact on the community.
