Lindsey Vonn's Dominance Continues: Second World Cup Downhill Victory in Olympic Season
In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Lindsey Vonn once again showcased her prowess in downhill racing, securing her second World Cup victory in just four races this Olympic season. At 41 years old, Vonn's comeback story continues to inspire, especially with her right knee reconstructed using titanium implants.
On Saturday, Vonn's speed and precision were on full display as she finished 0.37 seconds ahead of Kajsa Vickhoff Lie in challenging, overcast conditions. The American star's performance was all the more remarkable given the shortened course, which she completed in under 67 seconds, reaching a top speed of 81 mph.
Vonn's celebration was infectious, jumping up in the leader's box with joy as her teammate, Jacqueline Wiles, claimed an impressive third place, just 0.48 seconds behind.
This victory further cements Vonn's legacy as the oldest race winner in the 60-year history of the World Cup circuit. Her 84th career win marks her 45th in downhill, extending her record-breaking achievement.
Following her win, Vonn joined her coach, Aksel Lund Svindal, for a heartwarming family video call. Svindal, a former men's downhill champion, was part of the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics team where Vonn took bronze.
With her Olympic downhill gold from the 2010 Vancouver Games, Vonn is poised to be a strong contender for the upcoming gold medal race on February 8th at the Milan Cortina Olympics. The race will take place on the renowned Cortina d'Ampezzo slope, a venue where Vonn has consistently excelled throughout her career.
Despite her dominance, Vonn faced competition from Sofia Goggia, the 2018 Olympic champion, who finished 17th, 0.97 seconds behind Vonn. The defending Olympic champion, Corinne Suter, also made her season debut after injuries, finishing more than a second slower than Vonn.
The U.S. team's success continued with five racers in the top 20, including world champion Breezy Johnson in 7th place, Allison Mollin in a career-best 14th, and Keely Cashman in 18th, just 0.9 seconds behind Vonn.
However, the race was interrupted for 25 minutes due to an incident involving Austrian prospect Magdalena Egger, who crashed into the safety nets and was airlifted off the course with a bloody nose. Egger had previously finished second in Vonn's season-opening downhill win in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
Vonn's lead in the season-long World Cup downhill standings continues to grow, having finished second and third in the previous races. Saturday's victory was the fourth of nine scheduled downhills this season, and Vonn now leads with 129 points, 100 of which she earned on Saturday.
Vonn's pursuit of a ninth World Cup downhill season title is particularly notable, as it comes a full decade after her eighth title, which she also won in Zauchensee. She shared her thoughts on the season, mentioning her improved performance in super-G this summer, but noted that everything clicked from the start in St. Moritz.
On Sunday, Vonn will take on the super-G event, which is expected to be held on a longer course than the downhill.
