In an exhilarating showdown at Kempton Park, Harry Redknapp's horse, The Jukebox Man, pulled off a stunning upset to win the prestigious King George VI Chase in a nail-biting photo-finish. This Group One race became a heart-stopping experience as it concluded with last year’s champion, Banbridge, and the co-favored Gaelic Warrior, both vying for the top spot alongside The Jukebox Man.
As the owner of The Jukebox Man, Redknapp experienced a rollercoaster of emotions, waiting anxiously until the final results were declared before he could truly celebrate this Boxing Day triumph. All three contenders reached the last jump nearly neck-and-neck, with The Jukebox Man trailing in third place initially. However, jockey Ben Jones expertly maneuvered the 7-1 outsider back into contention against his formidable rivals.
In a dramatic twist, although Banbridge, trained by Joseph O'Brien, briefly surged ahead, The Jukebox Man demonstrated incredible tenacity and managed to secure victory by a mere nose, with Gaelic Warrior finishing just behind in third place. This remarkable win earned Redknapp a substantial prize of £142,375, and he visibly trembled with excitement as he spoke to ITV Racing shortly after the victory was confirmed.
"It is a dream come true to have such an extraordinary horse; it’s simply unbelievable," Redknapp exclaimed, his passion for the sport shining through. "Just being here on King George day fills me with pride, but winning today makes it all the more special. I feel incredibly fortunate."
The joint-favorite, Jango Baie, was trailing by a length as they approached the final fence, yet he closed in rapidly on the leading trio right until the end. Redknapp reflected on the tense moments leading up to the finish: "When they came at him, I thought for sure he was going to finish fourth, but he rallied again and showed such incredible guts. Everyone was surrounding me at the end, and I honestly didn’t realize we had won!"
At the age of 78, Redknapp drew parallels between this victory and his football experiences, stating, "This ranks right up there. Football has always been my life, and there’s nothing quite like winning a cup final for the fans, which feels incredible. Today, we had tremendous support, and I genuinely love racing, the sport, and the community involved, so to achieve a win on such a significant stage is fantastic."
Il Est Francais, who had finished second to Banbridge last year, led for a good portion of the race before The Jukebox Man took the lead just before the final bend. As the eight horses raced down the straight, it became evident that four competitors were in close contention, ultimately leading to The Jukebox Man’s victory.
This win marked the fourth consecutive success for the seven-year-old horse, including a prior victory at last year’s Kauto Star Novices' Chase. Jockey Ben Jones commented on the thrilling finish, saying, "I genuinely thought I had won by a head and wouldn't have to worry about the result."
Trainer Ben Pauling described the race as "incredible," highlighting how competitive it was, noting the number of horses still in contention as they turned for home. He expressed his delight at the level of competition, stating, "For us, this is monumental. It was an exceptional race, and winning such prestigious events is what every trainer aspires to achieve. Harry has been an outstanding owner, and I’ve always had unwavering confidence in this horse, as has Harry. We’ve triumphed in festival races and Grade Ones, but this is our crowning achievement so far."
