A new boy band is taking the internet by storm, but there's a major twist: one of their members is stuck miles away, battling visa issues. This four-member band, comprised of Evan Papier, Darshan Magdum, Anthony Key, and Zachary Sobania, has a unique origin story. The members met online, and two of them, Evan and Anthony, even crossed paths during unsuccessful auditions for the popular singing competition American Idol. Anthony tried to impress the judges with his cover of Dynamite by BTS, while Evan auditioned with Katy Perry's song, ET. But rejection didn't stop them. Evan built a strong following on TikTok before joining forces with the others to form Boy Throb.
"We all wanted to get a band together that wasn't just a carbon copy, everybody looks the same, they sound the same," Anthony explained. And he's right. Boy Throb is anything but ordinary. Their style is unmistakable, from their signature baby pink tracksuits and bright yellow trainers to their quick-cut videos featuring Darshan, who joins them via a green screen. Their lyrics, often re-worked versions of hit pop songs, cleverly narrate their visa struggles. For example, their version of Sabrina Carpenter's Manchild includes the lyrics: "Oh I'd like Darshan in the USA, oh I need him here by New Year's Day."
Their fans, affectionately known as "Throbbers" or the "Throb Mob," played a crucial role in their journey. They encouraged the band to change their name from @boyband2026 and have been instrumental in their success. But, here's where it gets controversial: some people have questioned the band's sincerity, wondering if it's all just a joke.
Evan, however, insists that they are serious about their music and goals. "People love to say something is satirical and people are just having fun, people love to just throw that word around," he says. The band has even responded to critics, which Evan believes only fuels their determination.
Their primary goal is to get Darshan a US visa so he can perform with them in person. They are aiming for an O-1 visa, which is granted to individuals with "extraordinary ability." They believe that reaching 1 million followers on TikTok will support their application, and they achieved that goal in just one month.
Now, with their follower goal achieved, the band is focused on getting Darshan to the US, hoping he can join them in the spring if his visa is approved. They also have their sights set on a Grammy. "Our number one goal is to get Darshan's visa and get him into America so he can perform with us, and to get all those accolades that all these artists we love and know have," Evan says.
