Education should never be reduced to just grades and academic achievements—it must also cultivate ethics, compassion, and social responsibility. But here’s where it gets controversial: how do we redefine success in a system that often prioritizes scores over character? Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim boldly addressed this issue, emphasizing that true education empowers individuals to become not just knowledgeable, but also ethical and socially conscious citizens. Speaking at the launch of the book Bangkit Semula: Memoir Warga Yayasan Anda Akademik, Anwar reflected on the founding of Yayasan Anda Akademik (YAA) in 1971, an initiative he co-established with graduates and youth activists to give school dropouts a second chance. 'Education should be inclusive, humane, and transformative, not exclusive or dismissive,' he stated, challenging the conventional view of education as a privilege for the few. And this is the part most people miss: YAA was born out of moral urgency, not privilege or power, focusing on idealism, volunteerism, and faith in human potential. It wasn’t just an educational institution—it was a 'school of life,' offering marginalized youth the opportunity to rebuild their confidence and rediscover the value of knowledge. Since its inception, YAA has provided a structured environment for students to resume their studies while fostering self-belief and a sense of purpose. Anwar highlighted that YAA’s philosophy, Insan Akademis yang Bertakwa, remains crucial for building a Malaysia Madani—a society rooted in justice, compassion, and balance between material and spiritual growth. The book itself is more than a memoir; it’s a testament to resilience, documenting the struggles and triumphs of educators, students, and alumni who turned failure into perseverance. Here’s a thought-provoking question: In a world that often defines success narrowly, how can we redefine failure as a stepping stone to growth? Anwar suggests that resilient societies learn from their past, transform wounds into strength, and honor the quiet institutions that shape meaningful lives. Published by the YAA Alumni Association in collaboration with UNISEL Press and Yayasan Penataran Ilmu, this nearly 400-page book includes Anwar’s foreword as YAA’s founder, offering a deep dive into the human stories that make education a path to liberation and renewal. What’s your take? Do you agree that education should prioritize character over grades, or is academic excellence still the ultimate goal? Let’s discuss in the comments!
